Position Description

The Institute for Medical Informatics (Director: Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil. Heinz Handels) in the Department of Computer Science/Engineering at the University of Lübeck is seeking applications for a W1 TT W2 professorship in Data Synthesis and Foundation Models in Medicine to be filled as a fixed-term civil service position, initially for three years with an option to extend for an additional three years, leading to a tenured W2 position upon a positive evaluation.

Your Responsibilities

We are seeking an outstanding candidate who has demonstrated excellence in research in one of the fields of data synthesis or foundation models in medicine and is capable of representing this field in both research and teaching.

The establishment of an independent research group at the Institute for Medical Informatics is expected. The professor will be expected to contribute to the teaching curriculum offered by the Section of Computer Science/Technology, with a primary focus on the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in Medical Informatics.

Requirements

The successful candidate must possess a PhD and a track record of outstanding scientific achievements in one of the following areas:

  • Generation of synthetic textual, tabular, or multimodal medical data
  • AI-based analysis using foundation models in medicine

Advantageous: Scientific expertise and experience in the areas of multimodal language and text processing using Large Language Models, AI-based methods for the semantic integration and structuring of medical data, and methods for making medical data usable for research purposes while ensuring data security.

Preference will be given to:

  • Applications that demonstrate outstanding scientific achievements and a successful track record of securing external funding
  • Participation in interdisciplinary research consortia
  • Experience collaborating with clinical and industrial project partners
  • Applicants that expand the existing expertise at the Institute for Medical Informatics with complementary or new areas of research focus
  • Those that open up new clinical application areas in collaboration with medical professionals
